Mad World: Simplyhealth join the crusade to improve mental wellbeing in the workplace

Simplyhealth, the UK’s leading provider of health plans, will be highlighting the necessity for employers to adopt a preventative approach to mental health and wellbeing at Mad World on Tuesday 9th October in London.

Recent figures by mental health charity Mind*, found that almost half of UK workers have experienced poor mental health in their current jobs. This has meant that supporting employees’ mental wellbeing has jumped to the top of the HR agenda.

Pam Whelan, Director of Corporate at Simplyhealth
Poor mental health is a growing problem in our workplaces. Our recent research with CIPD found that a staggering 55% of businesses have seen an increase in the number of employees reporting mental health problems in the last 12 months.

When it comes to supporting mental health, we believe effective signposting and early intervention support is vital. Line managers are often the first port of call when an employee is struggling with a mental health issue, so they need to know what support to provide and where to direct employees to, to get help at the early stages of a problem. Our Optimise health plan ensures access to these early interventions through an integrated Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), with 24/7 ‘in the moment’ support, structured counselling sessions and an around the clock GP line and online advice.

Mad World is Europe’s only solutions-focused conference and exhibition with a mission to eradicate stigma and spark a new era of mental health and wellbeing in the workplace. The forum combines best-practice learning with ideas for driving future innovation in workplace mental health.

Pam will be hosting roundtable discussions at Mad World with Royal Mail’s Global Director of Safety, Health, Wellbeing & Sustainability, Dr Shaun Davis. The pair will debate the important role of line manager training and signposting to ensure recognition of the early signs of mental ill health with delegates, sharing experiences and best practices.

Those attending the roundtable will get exclusive access to Simplyhealth’s innovative new online portal, the Knowledge Exchange. The Knowledge Exchange is a ‘swap shop’ for HR professionals, encouraging businesses of all sizes and industries to share their ideas and knowledge for supporting the health and wellbeing of their employees, creating a one stop source for new ideas.

Simplyhealth, who provide mental and physical health support to employees with its health plan Optimise, are the title sponsor of the ‘Leadership’ conference track at Mad World. The Leadership track is a selection of engaging discussions chaired by BBC’s Futures Editor, Matthew Shaw. Speakers will reveal the important part business leaders have to play in reducing the stigma of mental health issues in the workplace.

CIPD’s Rachel Suff is one of the standout speakers for the Leadership track. Rachel will dissect the findings from the Health and Well-being at Work 2018 report, produced by CIPD and Simplyhealth. She’ll outline the current mental health state of play in the UK’s businesses and highlight the key success factors that need to be in place to ensure initiatives have a lasting impact.

The Simplyhealth team will be available all day at the Simplyhealth stand, to provide you with advice on mental health solutions and ideas to support your workforce. There is also the opportunity to enter a prize draw to win mental health first aid training for your business, run by our partner Health Assured – a great way to give line managers the tools they need to spot the early signs of mental ill health.
